Colorado Springs, Colo.----- Despite struggles on the back nine during the final round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at the Eisenhower Golf Club's blue course, San Jose State University still finished in sixth place out of 21 teams.
The Spartans, who started the final round in second place at 10-under par, posted a team total of one-over par 865. UC Davis was the winner with a tournament record total of 831. Nevada at 855, Denver, 856; Weber State, 859; and Wyoming, 861, finished ahead of San Jose State.
"We had a lot of gains this week. Today wasn't our finest hour, but we'll grow from it. All in all, it was a pretty good start (to the season)," said San Jose State University men's golf coach John Kennaday.
Caleb Shetler of San Jose State picked up his first top-10 tournament finish since finishing seventh at the 2019 Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational. Shetler closed with a 74 for a five-under par 211. Only 20 players in the 105-player field finished under par.
San Jose State's Kristopher Stiles was the only player in the field to finish at level par at 216 and in 21st place. Carl Corpus followed in 29th place at three-over par 219. Kotaro Murata and Zubair Firdaus each had their highest score of the three-day 54-hole tournament in the final round and finished tied for 57th at 224.
"This was the first time for many of our players in this position (second heading into the final round). You have to understand what the distractions are and how to fight through them. In a way, you have to earn your stripes," the Spartans coach added.
SRINIVASAN TURNS IN A GEM AT THE SILVER COURSE
At the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational open tournament played at the Eisenhower Golf Club silver course, senior Vijay Srinivasan had his best finish as a Spartan placing second at six-under 210.
Colorado's Jack Hughes was a stroke better at seven-under par 209. Only five golfers finished three rounds under par and Srinivasan was the only golfer in the 45-player field under par in each of the three rounds.
Matt Heitel bounced back from a second round 80 with a 74 to tie for 16th place. Freshman Nick Watts had a rough final round with an 82 and tied for 29th place at 227. Luigi Wong signed for 234 and a 38th place finish. R.J. Cesario finished 43rd with his 241 total.
