Great Defensive Effort Not Enough Against Pacific

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Autum Monty tied her season high with five saves as she and the rest of the San Jose State Defense gave an outstanding effort for the full 90-minute affair against University of the Pacific on Sunday. Unfortunately, not enough offensive looks and a pair of second-half goals from the visitors from Stockton led to the Spartans dropping the nonconference match by a final of 2-0 as SJSU wrapped up their nonconference slate.

  • It was a tale of two halves as the opening 45 minutes saw the Spartans (3-5-0) flex their defensive muscles time and time again to keep Pacific off the scoreboard. On two separate occasions, San Jose State defenders stepped up to make critical blocks inside the box. First, it was Maddie Toomer as she headed away a rebound shot that was destined for the net. Later in the half, Cynthia Flores put her body in front of the ball on a free kick to block the attempt from getting past the back line.

  • SJSU put up a pair of shots in the first half while limiting Pacific to five attempts.
  • The second half saw Pacific (8-1-1) control the possession for the majority of the remaining time as they peppered the goal with 14 shots. Two of those shots found their mark, first inside the 53rd minute and another with just over three minutes remaining.
  • The Spartans finished with five shots, two on-goal, while seven of Pacific's 19 shots were on frame.

With the nonconference slate now in the rearview mirror, the Spartans will ready themselves for the start of conference play which kicks off next weekend with a road trip to Air Force on Friday followed by a home match against Colorado College on Sunday.
