Spartans Close Book On Non-Conference Play

STOCKTON, Calif. - Senior Finlay Wood scored his second goal of the season on Sunday at Pacific to lead San José State's efforts in its final non-conference match of the season.

The contest marked the team's fourth fixture in the last eight days, ending a frenzied run of play for the Spartans.

  • Trailing 2-0 early, the Spartans got right back in the match as Coastal Carolina transfer Andres Rivera drew a foul inside of the box in the match's 21st minute. Wood would then promptly step up and convert the kick from the mark for his second goal on the young 2021 campaign.
  • Wood is one of just 15 players nationally to take and make two penalty kicks this season.

  • SJSU came out of the halftime break with some fresh legs and new energy and nearly chipped further into the deficit in the 48th minute. Wood and fellow senior Omar Lemus both got off great looks in one sequence but were turned away on consecutive saves made by the Tiger keeper.
  • San José State ended the night with 11 shots (six on frame). The six shots on goal is tied for the club's second-most in a match this season.

  • Four Spartans - Wood, Jamal Adam, Max Allen and Ryota Nakashima - led SJSU with a pair of shots apiece.

  • San José State keeper David Sweeney made a season-high five saves in goal on Sunday. He also made the team's first penalty kick save this year, turning away a kick from the mark in the ninth minute.

  • Sweeney and senior Kameron Bolden each played the full 90 on Sunday.

  • Four Spartans - Rivera, Beau Leroux, Preston Moll and Xavier Verdu - all made their first career starts in a San José State kit.

The Spartans will look to return to their winning ways when they complete their two-match road trip on Saturday at Air Force. Kickoff for the conference opener is set for 11:00 a.m. (MT) against the defending WAC champions.
