Spartans Eighth After 36 Holes At Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. 
-- Carl Corpus and Caleb Shetler each shot a 2-under-par score over 36 holes and are currently in a tie for 19th place to lead the San Jose State men's golf team on Monday at the Husky Invitational on the par 72, Gold Mountain Olympic Golf Course, the site of the 2022 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship. The Spartans shot a 10-under-par score in the first round, and currently sit in eighth place with a 1-under-par team score of 575 (278-297).

"There was brilliance in the first round. I was very encouraged by what I saw today. Obviously, we can do it and we have to get used to playing 36 holes," said San Jose State University men's golf coach John Kennaday who is looking forward to an "up" day. to wrap up the 54-hole tournament. "It doesn't feel good to give up spots (in the standings), but the fact that we can shoot 10-under as a team is very exciting."

  • Shetler led the way in the first round with a 5-under-par score of 67
  • Corpus shot a 4-under-par score of 68 in the first 18 holes of the day
  • In the opening round for SJSU, the four counting scores to the total racked up 13 birdies and only two bogeys on holes 9 through 18
  • Joining Corpus and Shetler under par in the opening round was Kristopher Stiles with a 70 (-2)
  • The 10-under-par score in the first round was second best, behind tournament host Washington at 11-under-par
  • Zubair Furdaus is in a tie for 39th place with a 146 (73-73) after 36 holes
  • Washington leads the tournament at 23-under-par, 14 ahead of second place Boise State and Oregon
  • The final round of the 54-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday at the Gold Mountain Olympic Golf Course (Live Results here)

Like the Spartans' first tournament of the season in Colorado Springs, those players not in the team competition are playing a similar 54-hole format on Gold Mountain's nearby Cascade course, about 375 yards shorter in length.

  • No team scores are kept in the 45-player Husky Individual Invitational
  • San Jose State freshman Nick Watts had an excellent day with scores of 70 (-2) and a 68 (-4) for a 138 total (-6)
  • "It was very cool to see Nick do that," Kennaday said about his freshman from Oregon.
  • Watts completed his 36 holes with only one bogey, the fewest in the field and is tied for third place, two strokes behind Oregon's Grayson Leach
  • SJSU's Matt Heitel and Luigi Wong are tied for 22nd place at one-over par 145
  • The Husky Individual Invitational will conclude on Tuesday with 18 holes
