No. 6 Long Beach State Comes Back To End Spartans' Winning Streak

BERKELEY, Calif.----- San José State's 3-0 first-quarter lead evaporated in the third quarter and No. 6 Long Beach State came away with a 10-8 win on the first evening of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo tournament.

"We're trying to figure out who is ready to play D1 (water polo) and who isn't. Hopefully, this loss will help our growth," said San Jose State University men's water polo head coach Bruce Watson.

• San José State entered the match with a two-game winning streak from last week's Aggie RoundUp at UC Davis.

• San José State built its lead and stayed ahead on an effective power play going 5-for-10 for the match. The Long Beach State match was the third in a row the Spartans were above .500 on the power play.

• Gal Haimovich and Niels Hofmeijer each scored twice to lead the Spartans.

• Long Beach State pulled even with San José State at 6-6 in the third quarter. The match would be tied at 7-7 and 8-8 before the 49ers scored the only two goals in the fourth quarter.

• San José State continues play in the MPSF Invitational with September 25 matches against No. 12 Pepperdine at 1:20 p.m. and Pomona Pitzer at 5:20 p.m. Live stats for the Pepperdine contest and the Pomona Pitzer nightcap will be available.
