Volleyball Undefeated in MW Play After 3-0 Win Over Aztecs

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Haylee Nelson hit a season-best .630 with a team-high 18 kills as the San José State swept San Diego State 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-16) Saturday afternoon inside Spartan Gym in a Mountain West match.
 
Nelson was perfect through two-plus sets before committing her only hitting of the match in the third set. She recorded her 18 kills on 27 swings with just one ball that went long. She also had two digs and an ace.
 

 
•The Spartans begin MW play 2-0 for the first time since joining the conference in 2013. SJSU is tied for first in the conference standings with New Mexico and Colorado State.
 
•Latahevai Lousi also had an outstanding hitting match with 11 kills on 22 attempts and only two errors for a .409 hitting percentage. She added a block, a dig and an ace.
 

 
•Ryann Thomison also had an impactful hitting day as she did not record an error. She had eight kills on 14 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage.
 
•Sarah Smevog recorded a career-high five service aces in the win and added a team-best 12 digs in the win.
 
•Mia Schafer recorded 35 assists, seven digs and a block assist in the win.
 
•Yazmin Pitpit came off the bench to lead the team with three blocks.
 
•San José State has swept 5-of-6 opponents faced in Spartan Gym this season. The team lost the first set against UC San Diego on September 18, winning 15 of 16 sets played in Spartan Gym.


 
Match Summary
Set 1 – The teams combined for 10 tied scores and eight lead changes. SJSU took the lead for good at 20-19 and won 25-20, both points on Nelson kills.
 
Set 2 – The teams again had 10 tied scores but only one lead change. San Diego State led for much of the set before SJSU rallied to take the lead at 19-18 on another Nelson kill. Nelson's only ace of the match came on set point for the 25-21 win.
 
Set 3 – Another set of both teams keeping the score close, the last tied score at 15-15. An Aztec serving error and back-to-back Smevog service aces gave San José State the lead for good. Amethyst Harper put down her fifth kill of the set with authority to give SJSU the 25-16 win .
 
San José State goes on the road next week for matches at Boise State on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT, and at Utah State on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT.
