COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— For the second time this season, San José State senior libero Sarah Smevog has been named the Mountain West Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for her play the week of September 23-25.
Smevog helped lead the Spartans to a 2-0 start in MW play with wins over defending MW champion UNLV and San Diego State. She averaged 5.00 digs, 1.17 assists and 1.17 service aces per set in the victories. Smevog had a team-high 18 digs in the upset win over UNLV and added 12 digs against the Aztecs. She recorded a career-best five service aces against San Diego State.
The Spartans enter the week with an 8-4 overall record and are tied for first in the MW with a 2-0 mark, the best start to the MW season since joining the conference in 2013. San José State plays two road matches this week, starting with Boise State this Thursday at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT. Both teams are tied for first in the MW standings at 2-0. SJSU then plays at Utah State on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT.
