Volleyball Sweeps Hornets in Home Opener

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Amethyst Harper made an impact in her Spartan Gym debut as she led all hitters with season-best 18 kills to help the San José State volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Sacramento State Thursday night.
 
Harper hit .389 for the match as she recorded her 18 kills on 36 attempts and only four errors. She added two aces and five digs in the win.

 
•Sarah Smevog led the Spartan defense with 17 digs and recorded two assists.
 
•Mia Schafter and Ryann Thomison combined for two of the three Spartan blocks on the night. Haylee Nelson had a solo block for the team's third block.
 
•Another strong serving night for the Spartans as three players combined for seven aces – Letizia Cammillucci with 3 and Amethyst Harper and Yazmin Pitpit each with two.
 
•Cammillucci started her first match of the season, recording six kills, nine digs and three aces.
 
•The Spartans played in front of 520 family, friends, students and fans Thursday, marking the first time in 649 days that the team played in front of the home crowd.
   
Match Summary
Set 1
– The Spartans went down 4-0 to start the match and trailed 7-4 before the team got strong serving from Harper and Cammillucci and took the lead for good at 9-8 on Cammillucci's first ace of the match. The team then stretched the lead out on the set 25-13 on a Hornet hitting error.
 
Set 2 – San José State led from the first serve of the set and won 25-17 on another Hornet hitting error.
 
Set 3 – The two teams battled in the third set as the lead changed three times and there were six tied scores. Trailing 15-11, the Spartans got consecutive kills from Schafer, Cammillucci and Harper (2) to tie the set at 15-15. With the set tied at 22-22, kills by Nelson and Harper gave SJSU the 24-22 lead. After a Hornet kill to make the score 24-23, Harper recorded her 18th kill of the night for the 25-23 win and gave SJSU the 3-0 sweep.
 

 
San José State travels to Saint Mary's Friday night for a 6 p.m. match.
