Spartans Take Down Southern Utah, 2-1

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Freshman defender Carly Burns' first career goal in a Spartan uniform gave San Jose State women's soccer the momentum needed to take care of business on the road against Southern Utah. The Spartans dominated in all aspects as they took down the Thunderbirds, 2-1, to improve to 2-2 on the young season.

Worth Mentioning

  • Burns put the Spartans up very early in the contest, connecting on a shot to the lower right corner from inside the box inside the seventh minute. Fellow freshman Taylor Phillips was credited with an assist on the the play, the first of her young career.
  • The Spartans dominated possession with a 22-5 shot advantage. The 22 attempts were SJSU's most in a single match since putting up 25 against Fresno State on Oct. 26, 2018.
  • Burns came within inches of doubling her goal count as she fired off a short-range shot that hit the crossbar and bounced back towards the field of play in the 58th minute.
  • The Spartans added their second goal in the 74th minute as a Southern Utah defender inadvertently knocked Karina Barkmeyer's corner kick.
  • The road win was the Spartans' first win away from home since a 2-0 final in Albuquerque against New Mexico on Oct. 25, 2019.
  • Southern Utah broke up the shutout bid in the 87th minute. A well-placed corner led to a header by the Thunderbirds' Ellie Vasey for the score.
  • Freshman keeper Autum Monty got the start and played all 90 minutes. She finished with three saves on the five shot attempts the Spartan Backline allowed.

The Spartans will look to keep the win streak alive on Monday against a very good Utah Valley team. The match is set for a 12:00 p.m. MT start from Orem and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
