Volleyball Winning Streak At 3 After Win at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif.—Three Spartans recorded double-doubles Friday night, and Haylee Nelson hit .450 for the match to help lead the San José State University volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Saint Mary's Friday night.
 
Nelson led all hitters with 19 kills on 40 attempts and only one hitting error for her .450 hitting percentage. She recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 digs.

 
Two other Spartans had double-doubles in the win – Amethyst Harper with 15 kills and 13 digs and Mia Schafer with 44 assists and 11 digs.
 
•The Spartans improved to 4-1 on the year, the best start to a season since 2017 when SJSU won seven of its first eight matches and finished with a 17-12 overall record.
 
Yazmin Pitpit led the Spartan blocking attack with five block assists, a career high. Harper added three blocks, while Letizia Cammillucci and Ryan Thomison each had two.
 
•Sarah Smevog dug the ball again as she recorded a season-best 22 digs to lead all players. It was the 13th time in her career to record 20 or more digs in a match. She also had five assists and two service aces.
 
•The Spartans strong serving was evident again in the win with 11 aces from six players, led by Schafer who recorded three consecutive aces to start the fourth set.
  

Match Summary
Set 1 – The Spartans scored the first point of the set on a Cammillucci kill and didn't relinquish the lead to win 25-17.
 
Set 2 – Nelson started the set with an ace, but that was the only lead the Spartans would have in set two as Saint Mary's won 25-19.
 
Set 3 – San José State used a 6-1 run midway through the set to take a 16-8 lead. The Gaels got as close as 20-18, but back-to-back kills from Harper gave SJSU the 25-20 win.

 
Set 4 – Schafer started the set with three straight aces for the early Spartan lead, but Saint Mary's came back to take the lead at 7-6. The two teams tied 11 times during the set, and SJSU needed two set points to win 25-23 on Nelson's 19th kill of the match.

 
San José State travels to the state of Colorado next week for three matches. The team plays at Northern Colorado on Thursday, September 9, at 6 p.m. MT/5 p.m. PT. SJSU then plays at the Buffs Invitational against Colorado and Texas Tech on Friday and Saturday.
