TOUGH TESTS IN COLORFUL COLORADO : The Spartans take a three-match winning streak to the state of Colorado this week for three matches at the Buffs Invitational. Two of the three teams San José State plays this weekend received votes in this week's AVCA Division I Coaches Top-25 poll.
The Spartans begin the weekend playing at Northern Colorado Thursday evening, followed by matches in Boulder against Colorado on Friday and Texas Tech on Saturday. Northern Colorado and Colorado begin the week undefeated and receiving votes in the national poll.
San José State won twice last week, defeating Sacramento State, 3-0, in the home opener on Thursday before traveling to Moraga for a 3-1 win at Saint Mary's Friday night.
BUMP, SET, SPIKE
- Senior libero Sarah Smevog has been named the Mountain West Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the Spartans two wins last week. Smevog averaged 5.57 digs, 1.00 assists and 0.29 service aces in seven sets played in the wins over Sacramento State and Saint Mary's. She recorded her 13th match with 20 or more digs in the win over Gaels Friday night. Smevog had 22 digs to lead all players and added season-bests of five assists and two aces in the match. She also led all players in digs with 17 in the sweep over Sacramento State last Thursday night.
- After two weeks of play, the Spartans find themselves among the top-50 statistical leaders nationally in six categories including fourth in service aces per set at 2.53. Individually, Mia Schafer and Sarah Smevog rank among the top-50 in three categories. Schafer is 10th in assists per game and 38th in aces ps, while Smevog is ranked 34th in digs ps.
- Northern Colorado is the third team from the Big Sky Conference San José State will face in the past four matches (Portland State, Sacramento State).
- Amethyst Harper is making an immediate impact on the San José State team after transferring from Montana over the summer. She leads the team kills with 63, 3.71 per set, and is second in the conference in kills and fourth in points per set. Harper has recorded 10+ kills in four of the five matches this season including a season-best 18 kills in her home debut, a 3-0 win over Sacramento State on September 2. She has three double-doubles on the season and had a season-best 15 digs at Oregon.
