Volleyball Rallies In Boise To Stay Undefeated in MW Play

BOISE, Idaho—Three Spartans recorded double-digit kills, but an Amethyst Harper service ace gave the San José State volleyball team a 3-2 win at Boise State Thursday night inside of Bronco Gym as the Spartans remain undefeated and tied for first in Mountain West play.
 

 
Latahevai Lousi led all hitters with 18 kills, while Haylee Nelson recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 16 digs. Ryann Thomison recorded a season-high 12 kills.
 
•Sarah Smevog recorded her third match with 20 or more digs this season and 14th in her career. She had a season-high 24 digs to lead the team.


•Harper was limited in action for the match, but was key when she was on the floor with four digs, one kill, one assist and one important service ace.


 
•With the win, the Spartans remain tied for first in the MW standings at 3-0 with New Mexico who defeated San Diego State 3-1 Thursday night. Fresno State upset Colorado State 3-1 to knock the Rams out of first place.
 
•Mia Schafer tied her season high with 48 assists and was one short of her fourth double-double of the season with nine digs.
 
•Alyssa Sugai started her first match of the season and had three kills, two blocks and a dig.
 
•SJSU rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the fourth set and for a fifth set. This was the first five-set match for the Spartans this season.
 
•The Spartans are off to their best start since the 2017 season when SJSU began the year 11-4.
 

Match Summary
Set 1 – The set featured 18 ties and eight lead changes, final coming at 27-26 on a Lousi kill and Sugai and Pitpit blocked the Broncos for the 28-26 win.


Set 2 – This set was very different from the first as Boise led from first serve to win 25-15.
 
Set 3 – Boise State won 25-7, using a 16-2 run to close out the set.
 
Set 4 – The Spartans led from the first serve, the Broncos tied the score only once at 1-1. SJSU led by as many as seven points at 14-7, and won 25-21 on a Lousi kill.
 
Set 5 – Just as crazy as the first set, there were nine tied scores and five lead changes in the final set. The Spartans trailed for much of the set and used a 4-0 scoring run to win the set 15-13 on Harper's service ace.
 

 
San José State continues on the road with a match at Utah State this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT.
