Spartans Give Great Effort But Fall In Overtime

LOGAN, Utah - Freshman keepers Autum Monty and Shayla Sugai, teamed with a stout effort from the Spartan back line, combined for six saves and kept Utah State off the board for the entirety of regulation in Sunday's match against Utah State. Unfortunately, the Aggies were able to score a golden goal in the fourth minute of overtime to pull out a win and prevent San Jose State women's soccer from picking up a big road result.

  • Monty and Sugai split the halves in the net with each making three saves to help send the match to overtime.
  • On multiple occasions, the Spartan back line stepped up to make critical blocks in regulation. One of their biggest moments came in the fifth minute as the Spartans thwarted back-to-back shots on-goal.
  • The Spartans had several good offensive looks throughout the match, but was unable to put a shot into the back of the net. Cynthia Flores had one of the best chances of the day inside the 11th minute as she fired off a pair of attempts off a cross, but was unable to secure her second goal of the weekend.
  • Taylor Phillips had SJSU's last good look of the match as she fired off a shot to center of the net in the 94th minute, but it was corralled by the Utah State keeper. The Aggies scored on the ensuing possession as Sara Taylor was able to capitalize inside the box for the game-winner.
  • Phillips led the team with three shots, one on frame, while Flores and Kiana Miyazato finished with a pair of shot attempts.
  • The Spartans finished with 8-7 advantage in shots on-goal while Utah State put up 22 total shots to SJSU's 13.

San Jose State is back in action this weekend for the final two home matches of 2021. The Spartans will host two of the top-ranked teams in the league beginning on Thursday against New Mexico before playing host to San Diego State on Sunday in what will serve as SJSU's senior day.
