SAN JOSE, Calif. - Former San José State standout and Super Bowl champion James Jones will become the first-ever wide receiver and San Jose native to be recognized in the CEFCU Stadium Ring of Honor on Homecoming this Friday against No. 24 San Diego State at 7:30 p.m., announced by Director of Athletics Jeff Konya on Wednesday. Jones, a third-round NFL draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2007, played four seasons for the Spartans from 2003-06 and led SJSU to a 9-4 record during his senior season, with 70 catches, 893 yards and 10 touchdowns.
"James is a pillar in the San Jose community and is well deserving of this great recognition," said Konya. "His successes on and off the field represent the highest achievements of our alumni and we are excited to welcome him to the Ring of Honor at CEFCU Stadium. Thank you James for continuing to make San José State proud every day and congratulations on this tremendous accomplishment."
A four-year letterwinner at Gunderson High School in San Jose, Jones scored the game-winning touchdown against Stanford on a 42-yard reverse in SJSU's comeback win over the Cardinal in 2006. He posted six catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns to earn offensive MVP of the inaugural New Mexico Bowl, a 20-12 win over New Mexico. He finished with 126 receptions for 1,496 yards and 12 touchdowns, ending his career fourth all-time on the all-time receptions list.
Jones played nine seasons in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers (2007-13, '15) and the Oakland Raiders (2014). He caught five passes in the Packers' Super Bowl XLV victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25. Jones was inducted into the San José State University Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 (story here).
After retiring from the NFL, Jones joined the NFL Network as an analyst. He appears on a variety of NFL Network programs, including NFL Total Access and the network's on-location coverage of the Super Bowl. Jones is active in the community, including his Love Jones 4 Kids Foundation to help children of all ages.
The CEFCU Stadium Ring of Honor was started in 1998 to celebrate the university's football history, tradition and excellence.
