WHITTIER, Calif.----- Laszlo Szieben was one of nine San Jose State University men's water polo players to score for the No. 10-ranked Spartans in a 13-9 non-conference road victory.
The Hungarian freshman shared match-high scoring honors with the Poets' Maxwell Murphy as San Jose State (9-12) ended a three-match losing streak, the last two against Golden Coast Conference opponents No. 6-Pacific and No. 5-Long Beach State.
"It was good to bounce back. After a bad second half yesterday with Long Beach (State). The guys played great defense (against Whittier) and it led to a lot of offensive opportunities for us," said San Jose State University men's water polo head coach Bruce Watson.
Within the first two minutes of the match, Szieben and teammate Mark Kis put the Spartans ahead to stay, 2-0. Three times in the first half, Whittier closed the deficit to a goal, but three unanswered scores by Szieben, Niels Hofmeijer, and Kis covering the end of the second quarter and start of the third put San Jose State ahead 8-4.
Szieben has scored 14 goals in the Spartans' last five contests and has 26 on the season.
Yahav Fire was sharp in goal for San Jose State stopping seven shots while yielding five goals in his three quarters of action. Jamie Steingraf finished up in goal for the Spartans and was credited with one fourth-quarter save.
San Jose State returns to action the weekend of October 23 & 24 co-hosting with Santa Clara University the Julian Fraser Memorial Invitational. The Spartans will host six matches on October 23 and four on October 24.
On October 23, San Jose State is playing UC Irvine in a Golden Coast Conference match at 12:30 p.m., and Princeton in a non-conference contest at 4:30 p.m. The Spartans return to the pool, Sunday, October 24 taking on Brown at 8:00 a.m., Fresno Pacific at 10:40 a.m., and Biola at noon. Eight teams will be at the San Jose State Student Recreation & Aquatics Center for this year's Julian Fraser Memorial Invitational.
