Autum Monty Named MW Defensive Player/Freshman of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - San Jose State women's soccer freshman goalkeeper Autum Monty has been named both the Mountain West Soccer Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week for the week of Oct. 18. Monty is the first Spartan to be honored by the conference office this season. The MW made the announcement on Monday.

"What a great recognition for Autum after all the hard work she has put in this season," head coach Lauren Hanson said. "We talk a lot about defense being a team effort and I would like to credit not only Autum, but our back line and entire team for their efforts to earn two shutouts this weekend against top Mountain West opponents. The team's dedication to keeping a clean slate was impressive and a well-deserved award."

Monty made 14 combined saves to lead the Spartan Defense to a pair of shutouts against New Mexico and San Diego State over the weekend. Against the Lobos, she made six saves to blank the conference's top-scoring offense as SJSU knocked off New Mexico with a big 1-0 victory. Monty followed that performance by making a career-high eight saves against San Diego State in a hard-fought scoreless tie.

A product of Mount Whitney High School in Visalia, Calif., Monty is the Spartans' first weekly award winner since Zoe Aguirre was named MW Defensive Player of the Week on April 5, 2021.

Behind a great defensive effort from Monty and her teammates, San Jose State has recorded five shutouts this season, four of which have been in conference play. With a 4-3-1 record and 13 points, the Spartans are currently tied for fourth in the MW standings with three regular-season matches remaining.
