SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State women's soccer is set to put a bow on the 2021 regular season Thursday evening against rival Fresno State. The match is the Spartans' last chance at making a bid for the Mountain West Championship Tournament. With 13 points, the Spartans need to defeat the Bulldogs and have either UNLV or San Diego State lose their final match to clinch one of the six spots in Boise.
First Touches
- Fresno State has already punched their ticket to the MW Championship with 19 points on the year. The Bulldogs are currently second in the MW Standings.
- The Bulldogs are led by Brian Zwaschka in his 13th season at the helm. Kassandra Ceja ranks fifth in the MW with seven goals this season. The team as a whole ranks fifth in the league with 25 goals.
- Fresno State leads the overall series 17-11-3 and took both matches last season. Prior to that, the Spartans had taken five of the last seven matches dating back to Lauren Hanson's arrival as head coach.
- Freshman midfielder Taylor Phillips continues to impress week in and week out. She is currently tied for fifth in the MW with three goals in league play and leads the team with four goals and 12 points on the season.
- A total of 10 Spartans have found the back of the net this season. Phillips leads the team with four goals while Tiny Flores has scored a pair. Five of those nine are newcomers - Phillips, Kayla Fortenberry, Carly Burns, Tiana Cello and Kiana Miyazato.
