No. 9 Spartans Split Pair With Navy & No. 19 LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif.----- San Jose State University concluded its weekend road trip defeating Navy in a defensive battle, 7-4, before losing to #19-ranked LMU 11-10. Both matches were at the Burns Aquatics Center on the LMU campus.
 
            The No.9-ranked Spartans (8-9) reached the .500 mark for the season briefly on a day when goalkeeper Yahav Fire made 33 saves in two matches.
 
            San Jose State was on the right track in the morning with its win over Navy. Lazslo Szieben and Utku Karhan combined to score five of the Spartans' seven goals. San Jose State never trailed in the match and took the lead for good on two Karhan goals to break a 3-3 deadlock.
 
            Fire, the national leader in saves heading into the weekend, stopped a season-high 20 shots in the win. Navy goalkeeper Caden Capolbianco was strong for Navy turning away 14 of 21 Spartan shot attempts.
 
            The Spartans' afternoon match vs. LMU started out much the same as the Navy win. San Jose State scored first on a Bende Pardi goal and built a 9-4 advantage after Niels Hofmeijer scored for the Spartans at 2:50 of the third quarter.
 
            Less than 5:00 later in the match, LMU's Jonny Rimlinger, who led all players with five goals, tied the match at 9-9 and 10-10. Rimlinger would score the Lions' last four goals in the match. His match winner came on a 6-on-5 situation with 0:45 remaining in regulation time. The Spartans had a chance to tie and force overtime, but committed a turnover.
 
            Szieben led the Spartans in scoring with a season-high four and finished with seven goals for the day. Hofmeijer, Mark Kis and  Pardi with two goals each rounded out San Jose State's scoring.
 
            Goalkeepers Fire of San Jose State and Robert Halligan of LMU each made 13 saves.
 
            San Jose State opens Golden Coast Conference action, Saturday, October 9, at the University of the Pacific. The teams opened their season against each other in a non-conference match. Pacific won in overtime, 12-11.
