Spartans Stay Sizzling, Shut Out Rebels

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Seniors Jamal Adam and Willy Miranda each tallied goals while keeper David Sweeney matched a career-high with 11 saves as San José State earned its second straight shutout victory in 2-0 fashion over UNLV on Sunday.

  • Miranda scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to put the Spartans ahead in the 19th minute after collecting a pass outside of the box from senior Max Allen. Miranda would dribble through two defenders before firing a right-footed laser to the left of the diving goalkeeper.

  • It was Adam put the match away late, scoring his second goal in as many matches with just one second remaining. Adam also used some fancy footwork to create separation, taking a ball from senior Omar Lemus and putting it just inside the near post to give his side a 2-0 lead.

  • Adam has had a flair for the dramatic recently, scoring in the 79th minute on Friday before tallying a 90th minute goal on Sunday. He is the first Spartan to score after the 75th minute in consecutive matches since Jermey Romero in September of 2017 (79th at CSUN, 77th at Pacific).

  • Sweeney earned his fourth victory and second shutout in as many matches with 11 saves in the winning effort. The strong defensive performance matches his career-high for stops, previously achieved in his freshman season on Oct. 25, 2019 against Utah Valley (won 3-0).

  • The entire SJSU defense shined throughout the homestand, putting together the program's first set of consecutive clean sheets since the Spartans earned three straight shutouts from Oct. 25-Nov. 1 on the 2019 campaign (3-0 vs. Utah Valley, 2-0 vs. Air Force, 0-0 at UTRGV).

  • San José State tallied 12 shots on the afternoon (six in each half). It ended the day with a total of six attempts on goal.

  • Senior Rudi Castro made his first start of the season and led all performers with four shots for the match.

The Spartans will look to extend their winning streak to three matches when they return to the pitch on Thursday at Utah Valley. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (MT) in Orem.
