Spartans Shutout Streak Safe After Road Victory

OREM, Utah - Senior Rudi Castro scored his second goal in three appearances this season while keeper David Sweeney secured his third straight shutout victory in San José State's 1-0 win at Utah Valley on Thursday night.

Despite being down a man with the score level, the Spartans (5-5-1, 3-1-0 WAC) rallied to hand the Wolverines (5-2-2, 2-1-0) their first defeat in regulation this season.

  • Castro scored his 16th career goal (in just 30 appearances) to put SJSU ahead in the 76th minute, heading home a perfect cross sent in by sophomore Ryota Nakashima. The ball would bounce with force past the diving Utah Valley keeper and into the back of the net to give the visitors their third road result this season.

  • Sweeney earned his fifth victory of the season and third clean sheet in as many matches with three saves in the winning effort. He is the first Spartan since 2017 (David Heredia) to tally three straight shutout wins.

  • The save of the night came in the match's 47th minute as Sweeney went full extension into the far right post to turn away the Wolverines best look of the contest.

  • Sweeney now has eight career clean sheets and is just one away from cracking the program's all-time top-10 for shutouts.

  • San José State tallied seven shots on the night. It ended the evening with a total of two attempts on goal.

  • Senior Finlay Wood led all performers with three shots for the match.

  • Thursday's victory marks SJSU's fourth straight result against the Wolverines in Orem.

The Spartans will look to extend their winning streak to four matches when they round out their road trip on Saturday at California Baptist. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in Norco.
