Late Goals Power Spartans To 2-1 OT Victory Over Boise State

BOISE, Idaho - Sometimes you have to just put your head to it in order to pick up a big win. That's exactly what Cynthia Flores and Taylor Phillips did for San Jose State women's soccer on Friday afternoon as they each scored a goal via a header to hand Boise State their first home loss of the season. Flores scored in the 87th minute to tie the match at 1-1, and Phillips secured the golden goal in overtime as the Spartans picked up their first win over the Broncos in Boise since 2014, with a 2-1 victory.

  • Trailing by one with just three minutes to play, San Jose State (6-7-0, 3-2-0) capitalized on a corner kick to tie the match. Phillips played the ball to the front of the net where Flores awaited and knocked home her second goal of the season.
  • In the 96th minute of overtime, it was Phillips' time to shine as she found herself on the receiving end of a perfect delivery on a cross from Evan House
  • Phillips now has 11 points on the season (four goals, three assists), the most by a Spartan since Jamilecxth Becerra tallied 12 points in 2018.
  • House's assist was the third of her sophomore campaign, tied with Phillips for the team lead.
  • Entering the match, Boise State was the lone team in the Mountain West to be undefeated at home (4-0).
  • The win was the first for the Spartans in Boise since October 12, 2014 (1-0).
  • Shayla Sugai took over for Autum Monty in the net early in the second half and blanked the Broncos in her 37 minutes of action. She made five critical saves to pick up the win.
  • Boise State attempted 14 shots to the Spartans' 11 while SJSU had four corner kicks to the Broncos' one.

The Spartans will look to keep the momentum rolling on Sunday in another tough road match against Utah State. Kickoff from Logan, Utah is set for 11:00 a.m. PT.
