Spartans Receive Four All-WAC Honors As Tobin Named Coach of the Year

DENVER, Colo.—Four Spartan men's soccer players have received All-Western Athletic Conference honors for the 2021 season, and San José State head coach Simon Tobin has been named the WAC Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 9-6-3 overall record and fourth seed in the upcoming WAC Tournament.
 
Rudi Castro, Max Allen and Kasper Poulsgaard were all named first team All-WAC selections, while Beau Leroux was named to the All-Freshman team. The three first team selections are the most for the program in the 13 years the program has been a member of the WAC (1996-99, 2013-present). San José State has had at least one student-athlete receive first team all-conference honors for four straight years.
 
First Team All-WAC
Rudi Castro, F, 5-9, Sr., San Jose, Calif.
•First team All-WAC honors for the second season
•Scored four games and assisted on four others for 12 points this season
•Game-winning goals at Utah Valley and against Houston Baptist
 
Max Allen, MF, 5-8, Sr., Liverpool, England
•First team All-WAC honoree for the third consecutive season
•Second on the team in points with 13
•Scored three goals and had a team-high seven assists
•Game-winning goal in the 2-1 win at UTRGV
 
Kasper Poulsgaard, D, 6-0, JR, Hedensted, Denmark
•First team All-WAC recognition
WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier this season
•Scored three goals and assisted on another
•Game-winning goal in the upset of Grand Canyon
•Part of the Spartan defense that recorded six shutouts this season
 
All-Freshman Team
Beau Leroux, MF, 6-0, San José, Calif.
•Played in 15 matches and started seven
•Assisted on a goal at the Dixie State match
 
Simon Tobin, 2021 WAC Coach of the Year
•Tobin is in his eighth season at the helm of the program.
•This is his first WAC Coach of the Year award.
•He coached the Spartans to an unbeaten record in October (7-0-2), a 9-6-3 record on the season and an upset win over Grand Canyon, 2-1, on October 16.
