LITTLE ROCK, Ark.----- San Jose State University inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Scott White is one of 59 nominees for the annual Broyles Award recognizing the top NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Division I assistant coach.
In 2021, White coaches an inside linebacker group led by Kyle Harmon who leads the country in total tackles (121) and is fourth nationally in tackles per game (11.0). In four of the team's first 11 games, San Jose State limited the opposition to less than 100 rushing yards. Opponents have rushed for eight touchdowns, 12th best among FBS teams and second fewest in the 12-team Mountain West.
As the special teams coordinator, San Jose State is tied for fourth nationally with four blocked kicks (combined field goal and point after touchdown attempts) and is tied for 12th in total blocks (combined blocked kicks plus punts blocked) with five.
The Spartans' punt return coverage currently ranks 14th allowing only 3.36 yards per return. Opponents attempted to return just 11 of 63 punts this season and no return was longer than 15 yards.
San Jose State ranks second in the Mountain West and 34th nationally in kickoff return coverage and is 33rd in net punting averaging 41.27 yards per punt. Punter Will Hart has a 44.1 yard per punt average prior to the November 25 regular-season finale hosting Fresno State.
