Smevog Moves Up Single-Season Digs List In Match at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Libero Sarah Smevog continued her climb up the San José State single-season digs list in the Spartan volleyball match at Mountain West foe UNLV Thursday night as the team fell 3-0 inside Cox Pavilion.
 

  • Smevog, the conference leader in digs, led all players on the court with 12 digs. She now has 446 for the season and moved into seventh all-time list at SJSU. Smevog is fifth all-time at SJSU in digs with 1,227 in her four years.
  • Haylee Nelson led the team with nine kills and added four digs in the loss.
  • Lathevai Lousi and Madeline Boerstra each had three blocks to lead the Spartans. Boerstra recorded six kills and hit .417 for the match, while Lousi added five kills.
  • Ryann Thomison and Letizia Cammillucci each had six kills for the Spartans.
  • Mia Schafer recorded 22 assists, eight digs and a block assist in the match. 

With the loss, San José State is now 18-9 on the season and 12-5 in the MW. The Spartans are now third in the MW standings as Utah State defeated Colorado State, 3-1, and those two teams are tied for first place.
 
The Spartans have a one-match lead on UNLV in the standings as teams position themselves for next week's MW Tournament. SJSU plays at San Diego State, while UNLV hosts Nevada Saturday afternoon.
 
Match Summary
Set 1 – The Spartans jumped out to a 16-11 lead on a Thomison kill, but UNLV took its first lead at 23-22. San José State fought off two set points before the Rebels won 27-25.
 
Set 2 – Similar to the first set, SJSU took the early lead, 12-8 on a Nelson kill. The Rebels again battled back, taking its first lead at 17-16. The Spartans had a late lead at 23-22 before the Rebels got back-to-back blocks to win 25-23.
 
Set 3 – UNLV led from first serve, and the Spartans hit .088 in the 25-14 loss.
 
San José State travels to San Diego State Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. match.
