Spartans Win To Finish Winning MW Season

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Letizia Cammillucci and Haylee Nelson led the Spartan hitting attack Saturday as the San José State volleyball team won its 19th match of the season and 13th Mountain West contest with the 3-0 sweep at San Diego State inside Peterson Gym.

  • Cammillucci, the reigning MW Offensive Player of the Week, hit .423 for the match with 13 kills on 26 attempts and only two errors. She also recorded her third career double-double with 11 digs to go with her 13 kills.
  • Nelson added 13 kills to lead the team and recorded nine digs and a solo block in the win.
  • With the victory, the Spartans have won 19 matches this season, the most wins for SJSU since the 2006 season when that team went 19-12 and advanced to the semifinal match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
  • The Spartans end the MW portion of the schedule with a 13-5 conference record, the most MW wins in school history. San José State finishes in third place, the highest finish in the MW for SJSU and the best conference finish for a Spartan team since 1999-2001 when the team was second in the WAC each of those seasons.
  • The 13 conference wins are the most for the Spartan volleyball program since 2000 when SJSU was 13-3 in the WAC.
  • Sarah Smevog recorded double-digit digs for the 27th time this season with 11. She now has 457 digs on the season, the seventh-highest season total in school history.
  • Mia Schafer recorded 36 assists in the match and ended the day with 1,007 assists for the season. She is the first setter to record 1,000 assists in a season since Breann Robinson did it in 2017 with 1,105 assists.
  • The Spartans recorded nine blocks in the win, led by Latahevai Lousi who tied her career high with seven block assists. Ryann Thomison added five blocks to go with her nine kills, and Madeline Boerstra had three blocks and five kills.
