San José, Calif. – First-year head coach Charles Ryan announced both the men's and women's track and field indoor and outdoor competition schedules on Wednesday.
After a shortened 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Spartans 2022 slate features five indoor season meets from January 14 - March 12 and eight outdoor season meets from March 5 - June 11.
"The pandemic has reminded us all just how precious proper competition opportunities are in our sport," said Ryan. "I could not be more excited for the opportunities our 2022 schedule will provide for our athletes and our fan base."
The Spartans will kick off the 2022 campaign in Spokane, Wash. at the WSU Cougar Classic before heading to Albuquerque, N.M. for three straight meets, including the Mountain West Indoor Championships. NCAA Indoor Championships will take place March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
Coach Ryan on the 2022 indoor schedule:
"Our return to a full indoor schedule features competitions exclusively at world class facilities. Both The Podium (Spokane) and the new upgrades at the University of New Mexico will be fantastic experiences for our student athletes."
Outdoor competition will begin in Berkeley, Calif. on March 5 at the Cal Opener. The San José State men's and women's track and field will split time between two meets twice this season. April 1-2, the squads will be split between the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto and the West Coast Relays in Clovis. Then again on April 14-16, the two teams will break off with some heading to the Mt Sac Invitational in Walnut and the rest to the Byron Clay Invitational in Azusa. The Spartans won't travel outside the Golden State until the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will take place in Eugene, Ore.
Coach Ryan on the 2022 outdoor schedule:
"Having high caliber competitions here in the Bay Area is a great opportunity for our home fan base to see our team compete and come out to support. The new facility at Mt San Antonio College was built specifically to highlight the best of our sport and I know everyone is excited for the return of Mt Sac Relays to its proper home. We're also very fortunate that Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis is our host venue for the Mountain West Championships. They always put on first class events there, including the CIF State Meet. With California as our primary focus in recruiting, it's great for the team to be able to return annually to the venue that was likely the pinnacle of their younger dreams in the sport."
Ryan is entering his first season at the helm of the Spartan men's and women's track and field programs. The Bay Area native comes to San José with 14 years of NCAA coaching experience and won a pair of NCAA Division II national championships as the head track and field coach at Academy of Art.
