Colorado Springs, Colo.----- There are a remarkable balance, re-acquaintances with traditions, and familiar opponents for the San Jose State University football team in 2022 according to the initial schedule released by the conference office.
The 12-game regular season slate includes six home and six away games – eight Mountain West contests and four non-conference games evenly split between home and on the road. The Spartans finish another two-year cycle of Mountain Division conference opponents with Colorado State, Utah State, and Wyoming this season.
Unlike a year ago when San Jose State had an early four-weekend break between its first and second home games and started Mountain West action in mid-September, this year's Spartans play no more than two consecutive road or home games, have two home games in each of college football's traditional months of September, October, and November, and begin their quest for a conference championship on the weekend of October 1 at Wyoming with three non-conference games on record.
Coach Brent Brennan, entering his sixth season as San José State's head coach, will lead the Spartans on the field for the season-opener inside CEFCU Stadium against Portland State the weekend of September 3. San Jose State hosted Portland State in 2016 in a home opener. The Spartans' other non-conference home game is against Western Michigan the weekend of September 24.
UNLV on the October 8 weekend, Nevada on the October 29 weekend, Colorado State on the November 5 weekend, and Hawaii as the regular season finale on Thanksgiving weekend, November 26, round out the home schedule. San Jose State, which has possession of the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy, and Hawaii are meeting for the ninth time, but in San Jose for the first time, to conclude a regular season.
With 15 returning starters (six offense, nine defense) from last year's team that finished 5-7 and 3-5 in conference's West Division, the Spartans' make their third trip to Auburn since 2014 for one of two non-conference road games. The other will be a return to New Mexico State for the first time since 2012 to close out a home-and-home series with the Aggies that started in 2021 with a 37-31 San Jose State win in San Jose.
While six Spartan opponents finished with a win-loss record above .500, Fresno State (10-3) for the Valley Trophy on the October 15 weekend, San Diego State (12-2) on the November 12 weekend, and Utah State (11-3) on the November 19 weekend are three conference foes coming off 10-win seasons.
With a base schedule now in place, FOX and CBS, the Mountain West's national network television partners, will initiate selection of games that may include Friday night television appearances.
