SAN JOSE, Calif.-----Two defensive players that combined for 56.5 tackles for loss in their high school careers, a promising and explosive high school wide receiver, a second-team all-conference community college safety, and a dual threat quarterback add to the 2021-22 San Jose State University football signing class.
• SBLive.com first-team all-state defensive lineman Jairus Satele from St. John Bosco High in Bellflower, Calif.,
• Linebacker Jordan Pollard from Faith Lutheran High in Las Vegas, Nev.,
• Wide receiver Cieonta Davis from Dominguez High in Compton, Calif.,
• Safety Jaylan Lawson from Bakersfield College, and
• Quarterback Anthony Garcia from Capital Christian High, the Sacramento Bee's Metro Offensive Player of the Year, are the Spartan football additions on the first day of the February signing period.
"This is our best recruiting class since we've been here. I think we all feel really great about it," said San Jose State University football head coach Brent Brennan, now in his sixth season leading the Spartans.
"We have some awesome players, awesome young men who are joining the program today. So. We're feeling great about it."
Satele (name is pronounced Gy-rus Sah-tell-ee) was in on 84 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks as a senior at St. John Bosco High and was named to the Long Beach Press Telegram's "Dream Team."
Pollard was credited with 114 tackles and 19.0 tackles for loss in 2021 as a Las Vegas Review Journal second-team All-Southern Nevada honoree for Las Vegas' Faith Lutheran High.
In 2021, Davis (first name is pronounced See-on-tay) caught 29 passes for 625 yards and eight touchdowns for Dominguez High in Compton, Calif., and was named a first-team All-C.I.F. Southern Section Division 6 wide receiver.
Lawson was a second-team all-conference safety for Bakersfield College who was credited with 46 tackles, four pass break-ups and intercepted one pass in 2021.
The newest Spartans join 17 from the December 2021 signing period. Of the 22 signees, there are five offensive linemen, four wide receivers, three quarterbacks, three running backs, two defensive linemen, four linebackers, and one defensive back. Sixteen of them will be entering freshmen in 2022.
"It was important for us to bring in some high school guys so they can develop and grow into the great players they think they can be," Brennan added.
The Spartans are scheduled to begin spring practice on Tuesday, March 1, and conclude on Saturday, March 26 with a Spring Game in CEFCU Stadium.
