KAMUELA, Hawaii ----- Sophomore Kristopher Stiles shot a major college best five-under 67 to lead the San Jose State University men's golf team to a tie for eighth place at the end of the first round of the Amer Ari Invitational.
THE SCORECARD
• Stiles posted his first 18-hole score in the 60's as a Spartan and was the only player in the 115-man field to eagle two par-5 holes, first on #14 to get to two-under par and then on his last hole, #8, in the shotgun start format. He also made three birdies to help offset two bogeys.
• Stiles finished the day in a seven-way tie for sixth place. Arizona State teammates Mason Andersen and James Leow, playing as an individual entry, share the first-round lead at seven-under par 65. Forty-nine players were under par on the par 72, 6,875-yard Hapuna Golf Course for the round.
• In the team competition featuring nine teams in GolfStat's top-20 rankings, the Spartans are tied for eighth place at six-under par 282 with TCU and No.2 North Carolina. Besides Stiles' 67, San Jose State counted the one-under par 71 scores of Caleb Shetler and Carl Corpus and Nick Watts' 73.
• Shetler was one of the birdie leaders on the day with five.
• The Spartans did not count Kotaro Murata's 75 in the five-player, score-four format. Senior Vijay Srinivasan, playing as an individual entry, posted a two-over par 74.
