KAMUELA, Hawaii ----- In each of the first two rounds of the Amer Ari Invitational men's golf tournament, San Jose State had one golfer get hot and lead the way for the team to land in the top-10 at the end of the day. In the opening round, it was sophomore Kristopher Stiles with a major college best five-under par 67.
In the second round, junior Carl Corpus played his last 11 holes with six birdies and no bogeys for a six-under par 66 leading the Spartans to a tenth place tie in the 19-team field heading into the final round of the Amer Ari Invitational on the par 72, 6,875-yard Hapuna Golf Course.
CHIP SHOTS
• Corpus began his birdie barrage on the 18th hole, his eighth of the day and the hardest hole on the course, to get to one-under par. He birdied #3 and #4, and then ripped off three consecutive birdies starting on #6 to finish with seven in the round. Corpus moved up 35 places on the leaderboard and is tied for 12th at 137.
• The Spartans posted a three-under 285 team score during the February 4 second round for a nine-under par 567 total. San Jose State is tied with No.18 Auburn and No.7 Stanford.
• San Jose State counted an even par 72 from Kotaro Murata; Stiles' 73; and Nick Watts' 74 in the second-day team scoring. Caleb Shetler posted a non-counting four-over 76. Vijay Srinivasan, playing as an individual entry, shot a 73.
• Stiles continues to lead the 115-player field in eagles made. With one on the front nine in the second round, he has three for the tournament. Stiles has a 140 total after 36 holes.
• No.11 Texas Tech is the new team leader at 540. Arizona State is second at 541. No.21 Washington is third at 546. No.6 Pepperdine at 548 and No.4 Oklahoma State at 550 remains in contention for the team title.
