No. 11 Spartans Lose Pair At UCLA Mini

COACH BETH HARBERTS

LOS ANGELES, Calif.----- San Jose State University's ambitious weekend facing teams ranked No. 1, No. 3, and No. 8 nationally in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings concluded with non-conference losses to top-ranked USC, 20-3, and to No. 8 Fresno State, 15-9, in the UCLA Mini Tournament.

DRAWN EXCLUSIONS

• The Spartans (6-6) were tied with USC (4-0) at 1-1 midway in the first period before the Trojans pulled away for a 6-1 lead at the end of the quarter.

• Cila David, Riley Agerbeek and Jaime Pitcher scored for San Jose State. USC's Paige Hauschild, a member of the 2021 U.S.Olympic Games gold medal winning team and whose brother Ben played for the Spartans' men's water polo squad, led all players with five goals.

• Despite only 90 minutes between matches, San Jose State built a 4-1 first-quarter lead over No. 8 Fresno State (4-7). On January 29, Fresno State led San Jose State, 4-1 in the first quarter, before the Spartans came from behind for a 10-9 win at the Cal Cup in Berkeley. History from the 4-1 score repeated itself with the Bulldogs coming back for the 15-9 win.

• David would finish the Fresno State match as San Jose State's top scorer with three goals – her third "hat trick" of the season. Teammate Lauren Woolley added a pair of scores – the second time in the last four matches she scored twice.

• Spartan goalkeeper Elaina Davey had a busy day making eight saves against USC and seven against Fresno State. San Jose State was out-shot on the day, 65-47, in the two matches.

• San Jose State returns to action, Saturday, February 12, for its home opener vs. Cal State Monterey Bay in the SRAC at noon.
