Spartans Lose Heartbreaker in Extras

BOX SCORE (PDF)

SAN JOSÉ, Calif. -
Caroline Bowman had eight strikeouts in 7.0 IP to lead San José State (14-10, 0-1 Mountain West) in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to New Mexico ( 19-7, 1-0 Mountain West) in eight innings on Friday night at Spartan Softball Complex. Despite seven stellar innings of work, Bowman (2-5) gave up four hits and 2 RBIs in the top of the eighth, earning the loss in the circle.

The Spartans were able to squeeze out a run on a throwing error in the bottom of the eight to cut the deficit in half. SJSU had the tying run in scoring position on third base, but with two outs Ashley Rico was called for interference and ruled out when the Lobos third baseman collided with Rico on an attempted play for a pop up foul ball to end the game, the Spartans coming up short.

  • Jenessa Ullegue (9-1) came in for Bowman for a potential save situation and struck out both batters faced.
  • Six different Spartans accounted for San José State's equal number of hits
  • The Spartans left seven runners on base
  • SJSU had no errors in the field for the fourth game straight
