Record-Setting Round For Spartans To Start The MW Championships

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.—Natasha Andrea Oon shot a seven-under 65 to set the Mountain West Championship single-round record and helped the San José State women's golf team end the day in first place with a 9-under 279 at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club.
 

  • She broke the MW record of 66, set by Milagros Chaves, San Diego State (2015); Kailin Downs, New Mexico (2004); and Seema Sadekar, UNLV (2004).
  • Oon is just the second Spartan to shoot a 7-under 65 in a round. My Leander also shot a 65 in the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on October 25, 2015.
  • Oon was one-under after her first nine holes, making two birdies, a bogey and six pars.
  • Over her final nine holes, Oon made six birdies including three in a row on holes 11-13 and finished the round making a birdie putt.
  • Oon leads the field in birdies made (8), par-4 scoring (-3) and par-5 scoring (-4).
  • All five Spartans finished the day in the top-10. Freshman Lucia Lopez Ortega is second, three shots behind Oon, at four-under 68. Lopez Ortega is tied for second in birdies made with five.
  • Antonia Malate and Kajsa Arwefjäll each shot a 1-over 73 and are tied for sixth, while Louisa Carlbom is tied for 10th at 2-over 74.
  • The Spartans set two Mountain West Championship records after the first round.

San José State begins the second round on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., playing with Fresno State and San Diego State.
