Hole-In-One Highlights Spartans First Round at MW Championship

BREMERTON, Wash.—Kotaro Murata's hole-in-one on the par-3, 202-yard eighth hole highlighted the San José State men's golf team's first round at the 2022 Mountain West Championship on the par-72, 7,115-yard Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
 

  • The Spartans finished the day shooting a 6-over 294 and are ninth in the team standings.
  • Murata finished the day at even-par 72 and is tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard.
  • Murata is one of four players in the field to record an eagle in the first round. The eighth hole played as the fourth hardest on the course in the first round with one eagle, four birdies, 34 pars, 13 bogeys and three double bogeys made.
  • Three Spartans, Caleb Shetler, Carl Corpus and Kristopher Stiles, are tied for 28th after shooting 2-over 74s for the round.
  • Shetler made three birdies over his first nine holes and was 1-under after nine holes. He made one final birdie on the par-5, 513-yard 14th hole.
  • Corpus finished his round by making birdies on two of the final four holes.
  • Stiles started his round by making pars of 10 of the first 11 holes with a birdie on the 9th hole.
  • Matt Heitel is tied for 49th after shooting an 8-over 80. He birdied three of his final six holes of the round.
  • Heading into the second round, the Spartans are only one shot behind three teams tied for sixth at 5-over par, four shots from fifth place Wyoming and six shots from 34th-ranked Nevada, who is fourth at even-par 288.

Second-round action begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m., with San José State beginning their round at 8:45 a.m. with UNLV.
