Spartan Gymnastics Coaches Receive Honors

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—After one of the best seasons in school history, the San José State women's gymnastics team added two more honors as head coach Joanne Bowers and assistant coach James Williams were honored by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches Association (WCGA) as the Region One Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year, respectively.

Joanne Bowers, Head Coach

  • This is the second regional head coach award for Bowers during her career. During her tenure at Washington, she was honored as the 2009 West Region Co-Head Coach of the Year.
  • Bowers was voted the 2022 MPSF Coach of the Year and coached the team to the regular season MPSF title and MPSF Championship meet win as the team scored a 196.425.
  • In her fourth season, the Spartans recorded the top-five team scores and broke the team bars and beam records.
  • Bowers was named the 2001 NACGC/W Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year when she was at Kent State University.
  • She is the second Spartan head coach to receive this honor as former head coach Wayne Wright was named the 2012 West Region Coach of the Year.

James Williams, Assistant Coach

  • This is the second Assistant Coach of the Year honor this season for Williams as he was recognized by his peers from the MPSF.
  • In his fourth year on the coaching staff, he has helped the bars team reach new heights as the team broke the school record with a 49.350 against Air Force on February 11. The Spartans ranked 26th nationally on bars and swept all five first team All-MPSF honors on the event.
  • Williams is the third assistant coach at San José State gymnastics history to receive this honor – Tim Rivera in 2004 and Meghan Donohue in 2009.
