SAN DIEGO - Robert Hamchuk, Jack Colette and James Shimashita each had two hits to lead No. 3 seed San José State (30-29) against No. 4 seed Air Force (30-27) in the Mountain West Championship Game on Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Spartans led 3-1 after five innings, but the Falcons scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game and five more in the seventh inning to capture their first-ever Mountain West title, 8-3, over San José State to earn the league's NCAA automatic tournament berth.
The Spartans were picked to finish last in the Mountain West preseason poll and won 30 games for the first time since 2011, finishing third in the regular season with a 16-14 league record. San José State made its first trip to the Mountain West Championship Game, and finished with a winning record for the first time in over a decade (35-26 in 2011).
- SJSU won two conference tournament games for the first time since the 2011 WAC tournament, defeating Nevada twice then as well
- Left-handed pitcher Corey Sanchez worked a season-high 4.0 innings, earning a no decision on the mound
- RHP Casey Spencer made his third start of the season, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings and scattered two hits
- Makana Olaso drove in a team-best two runs for the Spartans
- RHP Brady Hill entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh inning, striking out the first two batters he faced
- AF's Trayden Tamiya then drove in three runs with a two-out, two-strike single to right field to give the Falcons their first lead of the game, 6-3
- Hill struck out three batters over 3.0 innings pitched
- Charles McAdoo doubled in the eighth inning
- For the second consecutive night, Nathan Cadena had a pinch hit single
- Jonathan Clark, Theo Hardy and Colette were named to the All-Tournament team
- San José State finished the year with a single-season school record 66 home runs
- Hunter Dorraugh tied the single-season school record with 15 home runs this season
- McAdoo set a new single-season school record by reaching base safely in 44 consecutive games
