Top-Seeded Spartans Begin Regional Play On Monday

For the first time this century, the San José State women's golf team is a No. 1 seed at a regional as the Spartans travel to the Ann Arbor Regional to play May 9-11, at the U-M Golf Course.The Spartans are making their 26th regional appearance after earning the automatic bid by winning the Mountain West Championship.


With this year's six-region format, 12 teams and six individuals will compete at each regional. The  top-four teams and top-two individuals not on an advancing team in each region will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 20-25, at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The other five regionals will be played in Albuquerque, N.M. (UNM Championship Course), Franklin, Tenn. (Vanderbilt Legends Club), Stanford, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course), Stillwater, Okla. (Karsten Creek Golf Club) and Tallahassee, Fla. (Seminole Legacy Golf Club).

The Spartans have won three national championships – 1987, 1989 and 1992. The program has played three times at the championships in the past 12 years – 2010 (Wilmington, N.C.), 2013 (Athens, Ga.) and 2019 (Fayetteville, Ark.)
 
The Spartans will play 18 holes each day, starting the tournament Monday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT The team plays with Virginia and Michigan for the first round.

The Spartans are playing in their 26th NCAA Regional since the format started in 1993. The school has won two regional titles - 1994 in Albuquerque and 1995 in Tucson. The team has finished second twice - 1996 & 2000.
