NEW ORLEANS, La.—San José State track and field athletes Gabby Spencer and Bryan Quintero have been recognized as 2021-22 Division I All-Academic Athletes by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
To qualify, the athletes must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better, completed at least two semesters at the institution, and participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships or finished ranked in the top 48 in their region.
Spencer ran the 200m at the NCAA West Preliminaries and finished 40th in the region. She set a personal record in winning the 200m dash at the 2022 MW Championships. This is her third academic accolade of the week as she received Academic All-Mountain West and MW Scholar-Athlete awards the past two days.
Quintero threw a career-best 62.51m in the hammer throw at West Preliminaries and finished 23rd in the region. He won the hammer throw at the 2022 MW Championships in May. This is his second academic award of the week after being named to the Academic All-MW team.
Spencer and Quintero are the ninth and 10th Spartans to receive this honor since 2015.
