SAN JOSE, Calif.—The 2021-22 San José State women's golf season was capped off recently as head coach Dana Dormann was named the Golfweek Women's Coach of the Year.
Dormann is the second Spartan women's golf coach to win this honor after her coach, Mark Gale, won in 1989 and 1992.
In just four seasons, Dormann has taken the Spartans to two NCAA Championships, been honored twice as the Mountain West Coach of the Year (2019, 2022) and was on the watch list for the 2021-22 Division I Jackie Steinmann WGCA National Coach of the Year presented by Golf Pride. Recently, Dormann was rewarded for her work with a four-year contract extension.
A 1989 San José State graduate, Dormann has made an impact on the Spartan women's golf since her days as a student-athlete when the team won the 1987 NCAA Championship. She was a student assistant coach on the 1989 NCAA Championship team.
After graduation, Dormann spent 10 years competing on the LPGA tour, winning twice – 1992 Las Vegas LPGA International and the 1993 McCall's LPGA Classic. She transitioned into a role as a teaching professional before returning to the Spartan program as the assistant/associate head coach for 13-plus years before being named head coach of the program in June of 2018.
