Spartan Gymnastics Welcomes Morgan Ross As Assistant Coach

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Morgan Ross, a former gymnast at the University of Alaska Anchorage, has joined the San José State women's gymnastics program as an assistant coach for the 2022-23 school year.

"After meeting Morgan and hearing from other coaches she has worked with at Maryland and Yale, we are very excited to welcome Morgan and her husband, Cody, to our Spartan family," said Spartan head coach Joanne Bowers.

"Morgan brings experience as a choreographer, strength and conditioning, and can coach all events.  She got her graduate degree and understands the value of a good education.  Her office skills and recruiting are exceptional, and she has great communication skills. She was a gymnast at UAA and is from Reno, so she knows our conference and enjoys the West Coast.  We think this is a great fit!"

"I am honored to join the Spartan family and assist Joanne and Neal in building on the team's success," said Ross. "My goal is to foster an excellent student-athlete experience by providing sound technical coaching and creating a supportive environment inside and out of the gym."

Ross comes to San José State from Yale where she spent the past school year as an assistant coach. She was responsible for the beam and floor teams and was the team's choreographer. Ross also oversaw the team's in-gym strength and conditioning program and assisted with recruiting duties and logistics.

Prior to that, Ross was the volunteer assistant coach at Maryland for three seasons as the Terps made two NCAA appearances (2019, 2021).  The vault team ranked in the top-25 in each of her three seasons.

While at Maryland, Ross pursued her master's degree in marine estuarine environmental sciences which she completed in 2021.

No stranger to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Ross competed for Alaska Anchorage from 2015-18. She was second team All-MPSF on vault, floor and all-around her junior year and was a two-time Academic All-MPSF honoree.

Ross graduated with honors from UAA in 2018 with a bachelor of science degree in environmental science and a bachelor of arts in languages (Spanish).

A native of Reno, Nev., Ross trained at Flips USA Gymnastics and graduated from Reno High School.
