Fleming's Debut Highlights Spartan Volleyball's Match at Weber State

OGDEN, Utah—What a Spartan debut for Blaire Fleming as she led the Spartans with 18 kills and hit .467 in the championship match of the Weber State Tournament Saturday evening. San José State fell to the Wildcats, 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-22) at Swenson Gym.

Fleming is in her first year after transferring from Coastal Carolina. She started the match for the Spartans and also contributed four digs and two blocks.

  • Amethyst Harper added 10 kills, three digs and two blocks for the Spartans.
  • Haylee Nelson recorded two solo blocks, the fifth time in her career to achieve this feat and the first since the win at Wyoming in April of 2021.
  • Nelson finished the match with five total blocks, the most in a match for her since 2019 when she had five at Boise State in early October.
  • Jiana Lawson led the Spartans in blocking with six, one solo and five assists. She also had six kills and three digs.
  • The Spartans recorded 12 blocks in the match, the most for SJSU since the team had back-to-back-to-back double-digit blocking matches last season in late October and early November.
  • Sarah Smevog had her second 20+dig match of the weekend with a team-best 24 digs. She recorded her 1,300th career dig in the third set, ends the weekend with 1,340 digs and needs just 40 to move into fourth all-time at San José State.
  • Yazmin Pitpit had another strong hitting match with seven kills on 10 attempts and no hitting errors. She also had two block assists in the match.

San José State will spend Labor Day weekend in Northern California as the team opens the home portion of the schedule against Saint Mary's on Friday, September 2, at 5 p.m. The next day, the team travels to the state capital to face Sacramento State at The Nest for a 2 p.m. match.
