SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Haylee Nelson continued her climb up the San José State career kills list Thursday night as the Spartan volleyball team opened Mountain West play with a 3-1 win (25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 25-10) at San Diego State.

- Nelson led the Spartans (7-4, 1-0) with 13 kills and moved into eighth place on the SJSU career kills list at 1,239 kills. Nelson passed Barbara Higgins who had 1,237 kills from 1984-87.
- For the match, Nelson hit .417 with her 13 kills on 24 attacks and only three errors. She recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she added 10 digs in the match.
- Sarah Smevog recorded her 21st career match with 20 or more digs as she led the team with 23 digs. She also had four assists and a service ace.
- Mia Schafer again led the team with five service aces and had 19 assists and two digs.
- Yazmin Pitpit had a team-best seven block assists and hit .375 for the match with seven kills on 16 attempts and only one error.
- Amethyst Harper added 10 kills in the match to go with seven digs, three block assists and two service aces.
- The Spartans won their first MW match of the year for the second consecutive season.
- The team recorded a season-high 16 blocks in the win as nine players recorded at least one block. Pitpit led the team with seven, followed by Madeline Boerstra with five block assists and Blair Fleming with five blocks, one solo and four assists.
