PALO ALTO, Calif. — Bence Szabo, Laszlo Szieben and Mark Kis each scored three goals in leading No. 9 San Josè State (5-5) to a strong victory over No. 15 Santa Clara (3-5) in the first match of the day. Kis and Nikki Mathiesen followed up with two goals each as the Spartans narrowly lost to No. 11 UC Irvine (5-6) 12-11 in the second match of the day.
Match One
- Gal Haimovich, Itay Nemet, Niels Hofmeijer and Erik Duesend also scored.
- As a team, the Spartans scored just under 50 percent of their attempted goals in comparison to Santa Clara only making 39 percent of their shots.
- Nikola Nikolic recorded a match high four assists.
- Willem Simon recorded a match best six blocks.
- Colton Boyd added another five blocks to make up 11 of the team's 16 total blocks.
- The Spartans pulled away scoring three goals in the fourth to close out the victory.
Match Two
- Laszlo Szieben, Utku Karhan, Haimovich, Nemet, Szabo, Niels Hofmeijer and Garrett Johnson all scored in the second match.
- The Spartans had the highest scoring quarter in the third netting four goals during the period.
- Zoltan Der recorded a block in the game.
- The Spartans wrapped up their eighth consecutive match on the road in the last seven days.
