Spartans Remain Undefeated In MW Play After Comeback Win at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif.—Playing in your hometown can be fun and productive. Prime example today as Spartan volleyball player Amethyst Harper returned to her hometown of Fresno Saturday afternoon and led the Spartans in kills as the San José State volleyball team posted a 3-2 comeback win against Fresno State at the Save Mart Center.
 

  • Harper, who graduated from Central High School in Fresno, led SJSU (8-4, 2-0) with 16 kills and hit .400 for the match (16-6-25). She added nine digs, four service aces and three blocks.
  • Three other Spartans recorded double-digit kills in the win – Blaire Fleming with 15 and Jiana Lawson and Haylee Nelson with 10 each.
  • Lawson led the team in hitting for the match at .714 with 10 kills on 14 attempts and no errors.
  • Sarah Smevog's final service ace was the match-winning point for the Spartans. She led the defense with 10 digs on Saturday and continued to cement her position in third place on the San José State career digs list. She now has 1,433 career digs, passing Dawnis Wilson this week on the all-time list.
  • For the third time in five matches, San José State (8-4, 2-0) recorded 10+service aces. The team had 15 aces on Saturday, led by Harper and Nelson with four each and Letizia Cammillucci and Smevog with three each.
  • Mia Schafer had 19 kills, six digs, one ace and one block, while Carly Aigner-Swesey added 18 assists and eight digs.
  • San José State fell behind early to the Bulldogs (6-8, 0-2), losing the first two sets of the match, 29-27 and 25-12, before rallying to win 25-12, 25-19, 15-8.
  • The Spartans are one of three teams to finish the first full week of MW play with a 2-0 record. SJSU, Boise State and Colorado State are tied for first.

 
UP NEXT – San José State returns home this week for matches against Boise State on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Utah State on Saturday at 1 p.m. All matches will be played in Spartan Gym inside Yosh Uchida Hall, located on the corner of 4th and San Carlos streets.
