Spartans In First As Malate Ties Scoring Record at Illini Women's Invitational

MEDINAH, Ill.—On a day when Antonia Malate tied the low-round school record, and every Spartan player shot par or better in at least one round, the San José State women's golf team finished the first two rounds of the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah in first place by one shot at 25-under 551.
 

  • Malate shot the low-round of the day as she set a school and tournament record with an 8-under 64 in the second round. She had a clean card in the second round with eight birdies and 10 pars. Malate started the day with a 1-under 71 in the first round.
  • Malate and fellow Spartan Jordyn Parr are two of the three players tied for fourth place in the individual standings at 9-under 135.
  • Parr shot her first two rounds under par in her Spartan career on Monday. She started the day with a 4-under 48 in the first round, making eight birdies. Parr then followed that up with a clean card in the second round with a 5-under 67, and finished the day with 13 birdies made.
  • The Spartans shot 276 in the first round (-12), tying for the third-lowest round in school history, and followed that up with a 275 in the second round (-13), to tie for the second-lowest round at SJSU.
  • The 25-under 551 is the second-lowest 36-hole round finish in school history.
  • Every Spartan recorded at least one round of par or better over the two rounds.
  • Louisa Carlbom finished the day tied for 26th at 3-under 141. She recorded a clean card in the first round with a 5-under 67, and started the round with 11 consecutive pars. Carlbom then shot a two-over 74 in the second round.
  • Lucia Lopez Ortega is tied for 29th at 2-under 142 after recording rounds of 70 and 72.
  • She started her first round with eight consecutive pars, while she had a stretch of nine straight pars in the second round.
  • Kajsa Arwefjäll is tied for 59th at 2-over 146, after shooting 74-72 for the day. She leads the field in pars made with 31.
  • The Spartans lead Kentucky by one shot in the team standings and have a five-shot lead over Texas Tech and Alabama. The top-six teams are all within shots of the Spartans.
  • Malate and Parr are just two shots behind individual leader Sarah Edwards of Alabama who is 11-under after shooting 66-67.

 
San José State begins the final round Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. PT . The Spartans will play the round with Kentucky and Texas Tech.
