Spartans Improve to 4-0 in Mountain West Action

SAN JOSE, Calif.—For the second time in three weeks, Spartan libero Sarah Smevog recorded a double-double to help the San José State volleyball team remain atop the Mountain West standings with a 3-1 win over Utah State inside Spartan Gym Saturday afternoon.
 

  • Smevog, the reigning MW Defensive Player of the Week, recorded 11 assists and a team-best 11 digs in the match.
  • She recorded her first double-double against New Mexico State with 10 assists and 10 digs.
  • San José State ends the weekend 4-0 in conference play, tied with Colorado State in first place.
  • The Spartans start MW play 4-0 for the first time in school history. The program has not started 4-0 in conference play since the 1999 season when SJSU was 5-0 to start Western Athletic Conference play. San José State won eight of the first nine conference matches in 2001.
  • Not to be outdone by Smevog, Mia Schafer recorded her second double-double of the year with 20 assists and 10 digs.
  • Haylee Nelson led the Spartan hitting attack with 12 kills on 24 attempts and added a team-best three service aces.
  • Yazmin Pitpit continued her tremendous hitting with nine kills on 11 attempts with no errors and a .818 hitting percentage. She, Blaire Fleming and Jiana Lawson each recorded four blocks to lead the Spartans.
  • Amethyst Harper added 11 kills in the match to go with seven digs and two blocks.
  • Letizia Cammillucci came off the bench and recorded five kills, seven digs, two aces and two block assists.
  • Carly Aigner-Swesey led the team with 21 assists and added three digs.
  • The Spartans (10-4, 4-0) dropped the first set, 25-23, but then came back to win 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16.

 
UP NEXT – The Spartans travel to the Rocky Mountains to face Wyoming on Thursday, October 6, at 6:30 p.m. MT/5:30 p.m. PT. The team then travels to Colorado State for a matchup against the current top-two teams in the MW on Saturday, October 8, at 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT.
