Spartans Start New Winning Streak at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Amethyst Harper led a trio of Spartans with double-digit kills Saturday afternoon as the San José State volleyball team got back on the winning train with a 3-1 win at New Mexico in Mountain West action.

  • Harper recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she led all hitters with 15 kills and added 15 digs and four blocks.
  • Haylee Nelson recorded her sixth double-double of the season and 27th of her career with 13 kills and 16 digs.
  • Blaire Fleming recorded 13 kills, three digs and three blocks in the win.
  • Sarah Smevog recorded her seventh match this season and 25th in her career with 20 or more digs as she led all players with 21 digs. Smevog added six assists, one ace and a key kill in the fourth set in the Spartan win.
  • Mia Schafer recorded 30 assists and moved into a tie for 12th all-time in career assists at San José State. She now has 2,092 career assists, tying Emily Burke who played for the Spartans from 2007-08.
  • Schafer also led the team with two service aces and recorded seven digs.
  • Jiana Lawson led the team with five blocks, two solo and three assists, while Harper and Yazmin Pitpit each recorded four block assists.
  • San José State improves to 16-6 overall and 10-2 in the MW. The Spartans remain in a tie for second place with UNLV who won in five sets at Utah State Saturday afternoon.

 

UP NEXT – The Spartans return home this week for two matches – Thursday night against Colorado State at 6 p.m., and Saturday afternoon versus Wyoming at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at Spartan Gym inside the YUH Complex.
