Spartan Volleyball Now 6-0 In MW Play

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—For the first time in school history, the San José State volleyball team sits atop the Mountain West volleyball standings after the Spartans won 3-2 at Colorado State Saturday afternoon inside Moby Arena.
 

  • On a day of firsts, the Spartans are 6-0 to start MW play for the first time in school history.
  • San José State won for the first time in 12 tries in Fort Collins.
  • The Spartans tripled the number of sets won in Fort Collins as the last time SJSU won a set there was in 1987.
  • For the first time this season, four Spartans recorded double-digit kills in a match, led by Amethyst Harper with 16, followed by Blaire Fleming with 15, Haylee Nelson at 11 and Jiana Lawson with 10.
  • Nelson moved up the San José State career kills, passing Stephanie Pascucci for seventh place. Nelson now has 1,295 for her Spartan career and needs 64 kills to move into six place with former All-American Lisa Ice.
  • For the seventh time this season, the Spartans recorded double-digit blocks, this time 13.0 against the Rams. Lawson led the Spartan block with six, three solo and three assists, followed by Nelson with four, two solo and two assists. Yazmin Pitpit added three block assists, while Harper and Letizia Cammillucci had two blocks each.
  • In a first for the Spartans this season, four players recorded double-digit digs in the match, leading to two double-doubles.
  • Sarah Smevog recorded 24 digs to lead all players, her fifth match this season with 20+ digs and 23rd of her career. She also had eight assists in the win.
  • Mia Schafer recorded her third consecutive double-double with 31assists and 11 digs.
  • Carly Aigner-Swesey had her first double-double in a Spartan uniform with 24 digs and 10 digs.
  • Cammillucci had a season-best 11 digs to go with her eight kills in the match.

 
UP NEXT – The Spartans return home for the next three matches, starting on Thursday the 13th with New Mexico at 6 p.m., Saturday the 15th against Air Force at 1 p.m., and Tuesday the 18th against Nevada at 6 p.m. All three matches will be played at Spartan Gym inside the YUH Complex on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
