The San José State volleyball returns home this week for two crucial Mountain West matches inside Spartan Gym. The Spartans face Colorado State Thursday night in a battle for second place in the MW standings. Both teams are 10-2 in the conference, and SJSU won the meeting in Fort Collins earlier this season. Wyoming comes to town for a Saturday afternoon match and currently sits in a tie for fifth place.
San José State brings a 16-6 overall record and 10-2 MW mark into the week and is tied for second place with Colorado State. SJSU started a new winning streak at New Mexico last Saturday with a 3-1 win after falling in the previous two matches.
BUMP, SET, SPIKE
- When San José State won at Colorado State on October 8, it marked the first time in 12 appearances in Fort Collins that the Spartans defeated the Rams. Both teams had perfect conference records at 5-0 before SJSU improved to 6-0 at the time. It was also the first set won by the Spartans in Fort Collins since the 1987 season.
- Haylee Nelson is just that close to sixth all-time on the San José State career kills list. She begins the week at 1,354 kills and needs five kills to move into sixth place with former All-American Lisa Ice. Nelson needs 72 kills to hit fifth place at 1,426 kills by Dawnis Wilson
- Seven times this season, Sarah Smevog has recorded 20 or more digs in a match. She started the season with 23 digs against Southern Utah and 24 digs at Weber State. She had 23 digs in a four-set win at San Diego State to move her into third place all-time at San José State in digs and followed that up with 20 digs in a home win over Boise State. She then recorded 24 digs in the 3-2 win at Colorado State, 24 digs at UNLV and 21 at New Mexico. For her career, Smevog has recorded 20 or more digs in 25 matches including a career-best 35 at Utah State in 2019.
- Sarah Smevog is making her mark on the Mountain West career digs list as she closes in on the top-10. She is currently 12th on the list and would tie former Spartans Luiza Andrade who is 10th in digs at 1,653.
- Setter Mia Schafer is now tied for 12th all-time at San José State in assists with 2,092. She is tied with Emily Burke who played in 2007 and 2008. Schafer needs just 10 assists to move into 11th place and 238 assists to crack the top-10. Schafer recorded her 2,000th career assist against Nevada in mid-October.
UP NEXT: San José State plays the final two road matches of the Mountain West schedule with contests at Utah State on November 10 and at Boise State on November 12.
