RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Anthony Guzman netted two goals and David Sweeney made eight saves to lead No. 2 San José State (9-5-3, 5-2-2 WAC) to a 4-0 win over No. 3 Seattle U (6-9-1, 5-4-0 WAC) in the semifinals of the 2022 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The Spartans were also led by Ryota Nakashima who scored one of the goals of the year and Finlay Wood who knocked in a penalty kick.
- Sweeney picked up his WAC-leading seventh shutout of the season.
- Sweeney is the first Spartans goalkeeper since Jonathan Lester in 2009 to record seven shutouts in a season.
- With his eight saves, Sweeney moved into sixth all-time for most saves by a Spartans goalkeeper.
- Sweeney has 218 career saves and is only one save away from tying Joe Gangale (1985-1985) for the fifth most saves by a Spartans goalkeeper in history.
- The Spartans opened the scoring with two goals less than 90 seconds apart.
- Nakashima scored a brilliant goal on a curler from just outside the box at 32:23 off an assist by Angel Iniguez.
- Wood made it 2-0 on a penalty kick after Eduardo Miranda was taken down in the box at 33:45.
- Guzman scored two goals back to back at 85:04 and 86:25.
- The second of his goals was assisted by Sweeney.
- For Sweeney, it was his first career assist.
- For Nakashima, it was his second goal in as many games as he also scored the match-winning goal against Seattle U last Friday.
- Iniguez picked up his team-leading fifth assist of the season.
- Guzman is now tied for second on the team in goals this season with four.
- The Spartans qualify for the championship match for the third time in six seasons as they previously made the championship match in 2017 and 2018.
UP NEXT: The Spartans move on to the championship match of the 2022 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament. They will face either No. 1 Air Force or No. 5 California Baptist on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at CBU Soccer Stadium in Riverside, Calif.
